What is the IMF?
A music course in summer? An international camp for young musicians? A cultural event? It is all this – and a lot more. Above all, the IMF is a gift! A present or rather a gesture to surprise everyone, who experiences it, each time anew. A gesture which exceeds any pattern, any project or individual expectation. Those, who participated see music in a new way, like a door which opens up to an intense and more truthful taste of life itself.
The IMF, the International Musical Friendship, is an experience of music and friendship which emerged from the encounter of some musicians of different nationalities in 1993. During this encounter these musicians felt the instant desire to share a musical holiday with their young students. Since then over 100 young musicians from Austria, Germany, Poland, Latvia, Russia and Italy come together every summer. The joy of playing music together motivates the tutors to commit themselves every year. The IMF is not a master course, but it is a place where everyone is looking for beauty. Thus the seemingly impossible becomes true: Young people of completely different backgrounds like their different languages, different age and different musical levels experience a unity and see themselves as protagonists of an adventure with great impact on their lives.
The international music camp arose from the friendship of some musicians from Germany, Italy and Poland. It was their wish to pass on to young people their experience of friendship going beyond making music together. It is a very pleasant fact that, since 2006 musicians from Latvia, since 2009 from Russia and since 2017 young Swiss musicians joined in. Every year pupils and tutors come together in one of the partaking countries (Russia, Latvia, Poland, Italy, Germany) for ten days full of life and music. In the course of the years, the various musical backgrounds and traditions of the participants lead to a vivid cultural exchange, the base of which is music, but the “heart” of which beats lively thanks to the mutual experience of human interaction.
1000 Young Musicians
Through the years over 1000 young people have had the pleasure of this experience. The IMF lead to studies abroad, concert cycles and professional engagement.
The latest camp, with more than 100 young musicians between 10 and 22 years old and their teachers, brought the spirit of friendship and sharing, which has always inspired the IMF, to Latvia.
The musicians come from different regions in Germany and Italy, from Poland, Latvia, Austria, Switzerland and Russia.
11 Music Schools
In the mean time teachers and students of multiple European music schools take part in the IMF: Kreismusikschule Limburg (D), Szkola Muzyczna Stopnia from Svidnica (PL) and Scuola di musica Lino Liviabella from Macerata (It) are the founding schools of the encounters. During the various camps further music schools joined: Musikschule Traunwalchen der Stadt Traunreut (D), Musikschule Grünwald (D), Children's Music School Uglich (Ru), Muzikas viduskola from Jelgava (Lt), Szkola Muzyczna Stopnia Im. Vitolda Lutoslavkiego from Lublin (Pl), Scuola di musica Pontesound from Cremona (It), Academia musicale S. Girolamo Emilianiaus Corbetta (It) and Städtische Musikschule Innsbruck (D).
What makes this group of musicians absolutely unique is their strong friendship, which is, of course, complemented by their musicality and remarkable tuition experience.
10 Days Together
Besides chamber music and orchestra rehearsals and individual music studies, the IMF camps offer a diverse cultural programme such as visiting important sights of cultural heritage of the hosting area and, very important, our traditional Olympic games, song recitals with songs of the participating nations and much more. These are all very special opportunities to get to know one another and to promote a worldwide unique event like the IMF.
