What is the IMF?
A music course in summer? An international camp for young musicians? A cultural event? It is all this – and a lot more. Above all, the IMF is a gift! A present or rather a gesture to surprise everyone, who experiences it, each time anew. A gesture which exceeds any pattern, any project or individual expectation. Those, who participated see music in a new way, like a door which opens up to an intense and more truthful taste of life itself.
The IMF, the International Musical Friendship, is an experience of music and friendship which emerged from the encounter of some musicians of different nationalities in 1993. During this encounter these musicians felt the instant desire to share a musical holiday with their young students. Since then over 100 young musicians from Austria, Germany, Poland, Latvia, Russia and Italy come together every summer. The joy of playing music together motivates the tutors to commit themselves every year. The IMF is not a master course, but it is a place where everyone is looking for beauty. Thus the seemingly impossible becomes true: Young people of completely different backgrounds like their different languages, different age and different musical levels experience a unity and see themselves as protagonists of an adventure with great impact on their lives.
32 encounters
The international music camp arose from the friendship between several musicians from Germany, Italy and Poland. It was their wish to pass on the experience of friendship to young people, beyond simply making music together. Fortunately, participants from Latvia have been joining since 2006, and participants from Russia and other countries such as the USA, Switzerland and Luxembourg since 2009. Every year, students and teachers meet alternately in one of the participating countries (Russia, Latvia, Poland, Italy, Germany) for eight to ten days of intensive communal living with lots of music. Over the years, the different musical experiences and traditions of the participants have given rise to an extremely lively cultural exchange, whose source is music, but whose ‘heart’ is the human encounters made possible by living together.
1000 Young Musicians
Through the years over 1000 young people have had the pleasure of this experience. The IMF lead to studies abroad, concert cycles and professional engagement.

15 Tutors
What makes this group of musicians absolutely unique is their strong friendship, which is, of course, complemented by their musicality and remarkable tuition experience.
10 Days Together
Besides chamber music and orchestra rehearsals and individual music studies, the IMF camps offer a diverse cultural programme such as visiting important sights of cultural heritage of the hosting area and, very important, our traditional Olympic games, song recitals with songs of the participating nations and much more. These are all very special opportunities to get to know one another and to promote a worldwide unique event like the IMF.
